Pisa to Deglio

At Pisa airport, get onto the elevated carriageway which is marked as leading towards the Livorno-Genova autostrada.  N.B. (1) the onramp onto this elevated road is quite short and (2) the elevated road itself is 2-way traffic.

After the autostrada tollticket-booth, head for Genova (as opposed to Livorno).  Continue for about 45 miles; you pass Massa, Carrara and Sarzana, and then the next exit, which you take, is onto the La Spezia-Parma autostrada : head for Parma.  Continue for about 5 miles and take the first exit, marked Aulla.

Only 9 miles to go now.

As you leave the autostrada exit toll booth at Aulla, the road bends right and crosses over a river, then merges right into a street lined on both sides with builders' merchants and gas stations etc;  after 200 yards this becomes a one-way giratory system, where, following signs for Pontremoli, you carry around to the left and then leave the giratory to go under a railway bridge.

Very soon after that bridge the road becomes another gyratory system where, still following for Pontremoli, you carry around to the left - in left lane for the first 50 yards, then into the right lane for another 200 yards or so - until you are heading due North on the Aulla-Pontremoli road.  On the left of the road, a railway embankment. On the right, intermittent houses, shops, and small turn-offs.  After about 400 yards there  are traffic lights, where you turn right onto a smaller road, towards Licciana Nardi;  the turning is immediately before the main road crosses a river;  if you reach Masero or TerraRossa, you've gone too far on the Pontremoli road.

5 miles along the Licciana road, going north-east through the villages of Canalescuro, Ponterotto, and the slightly larger village of Monti, you reach Licciana.

In Licciana, there's only one signposted turning off to the left, which you take;  you actually take it by turning to the right off the main road and going around a traffic island to re-cross the main road, because it's a sharp turn uphill to the left - signposted Panicale, Deglio and Bagnone.

From Licciana, follow this little road uphill, round a sharp bend to the right, still going uphill, and after 1 mile you reach a church on your left at the top.  The road bends left around the church, goes downhill a little, and after 50 yards you reach a fork : Panicale to the left, Villa di Panicale to the right.  Taking the left fork, another 50 yards downhill brings you into Panicale, where the first thing you see is another church on your left.  Immediately past this church take the small road leading sharply off downhill and backwards to the left, possibly signposted Deglio.

2 miles to go.  Carry along this road, downhill into the valley of Deglio, past a couple of cottages, then a largish stable on the right, and then, with the valley floor on your left, the road starts going slightly uphill and peters out into a gravel track.

300 yards to go, but the last part of the track is extremely rough and not generally navigable by car - there is a place to park on a shoulder of grass just before the worst of the rough.  When you start seeing thickets of bamboos, you know the house is near.
